Lesson 07 of 7 · How to learn

One window to read. One window to look.

This is how to use every series in the kit: lesson on one side, the real report on the other, and a guess before every look.
1

Two windows, side by side

Every series in the kit is written to be read with the report open next to it. Put the lesson on one half of the screen and Power BI Desktop on the other: click the browser and press Win + ←, then click Desktop and press Win + →.

Then work every question with the same four steps:

1ReadUp to the question, and stop.
2PredictAnswer before you look. A wrong guess is fine: it's what makes the answer stick.
3LookFind it in Desktop. Each lesson tells you which view.
4CheckCompare, note anything that surprised you, then read on.

Why predict before looking in Desktop?

2

Try the loop once

This question comes from the model-layer series: which has more rows, DimDate or FactTradeMonthly? You've predicted. Now look.

Answer the question above to unlock this.

Step 3, look: open Table view, then select each table in the Data pane and read the status bar.

Power BI Desktop (simulated)
Report view: the report pages.

Which queries are in italics, because they don't load?
Which tables are joined, and which end of each line has the 1?
How many rows does a table have?

Little and often. One lesson a day, with Desktop open, beats a whole series in one sitting. The streak counter is there to nudge you back tomorrow.
The ruleRead, predict, look, check. And close Desktop with Don't save.
