Lesson 04 of 7 ยท Direct Lake
Read the lake. Don't copy it.
Import makes a copy. DirectQuery asks every time. Direct Lake reads the lake straight into memory.

Predict first What does refresh do?
In an Import model, refresh copies every row from the source into the model. The kit's gold tables are now Delta tables in the lake, and the model is Direct Lake .
What does 'refresh' do in Direct Lake?
Copies all the rows again, like Import Points the model at the latest version of each Delta table Nothing, Direct Lake has no refresh
Play Three modes, one morning
Three copies of the kit's report, one per storage mode, all on the same gold tables. Make things happen and watch what each shows.
New rows land in gold
Refresh
Direct Lake auto-updates
Gold is at version 1. Every report shows version 1.
Sort it Two flavours of Direct Lake
There are two kinds: Direct Lake on OneLake and Direct Lake on SQL . For a new model like the kit's, OneLake is the usual choice.
Can fall back to DirectQuery when it can't answer from memory ๐ On OneLake ๐ On SQL
Can use tables from more than one Fabric item ๐ On OneLake ๐ On SQL
Can mix in Import tables in the same model ๐ On OneLake ๐ On SQL
Uses the SQL endpoint for schema and security checks ๐ On OneLake ๐ On SQL
Generally available since March 2026 ๐ On OneLake ๐ On SQL
Check Two honest questions After a reframe, the first person to open one visual waits a little longer. Why?
The model is copying all the data again The columns that visual needs are being loaded for the first time
The kit's tables are small: a few thousand rows. Is Direct Lake required to use Fabric?
Yes, Fabric models must be Direct Lake No. For small tables Import is still a good choice.
Recap Three things to keep 1 Direct Lake reads Delta tables from the lake. Refresh is framing : seconds, not a copy.2 Use Direct Lake on OneLake for new models. It never falls back to DirectQuery. 3 Direct Lake is a choice. Import is still fine for small tables.
